Citicoline (cytidine 5’diphosphocholine or CDP for short) is a naturally occurring, water soluble, molecule that is used by the brain to make phospholipids, including phosphatidylcholine. Phosphatidylcholine comprises 30% of the grey matter of brain tissue. CDP also raises levels of acetylcholine which improves brain metabolism and overall energy, and increases levels of the neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine. The supplement we offer was used in the MRI study discussed below.
Dr. Perry Renshaw, Brain Researcher
The results of study released in April 2008 and conducted at McClean Hospital in Belmont, Massachussetts, by Dr. Perry Renshaw showed that Citicoline improved brain function in middle aged people.
The researchers took a group of volunteers and put them in an MRI to measure the energy needed to make our brains work. Then they told the volunteers to take Citicoline every day. After six weeks the volunteers were put back into the MRI to see if there were any changes. "The unanticipated and somewhat remarkable result that we found was that the brain energy supply... is actually increased in critical brain regions by this supplement," said Renshaw.
Dr. Renshaw said "The kinds
of words they (test subjects) used to describe how they felt were sharper, a little bit
more alert, more productive at work, more energetic."
Scientific research demonstrates that Citicoline consumption promotes brain metabolism by enhancing the synthesis of acetyl-choline, restoring phospholipid content in the brain and affecting neuron membrane excitability and osmosis (by its effect on the ATP-dependent sodium and potassium pump). When taken orally, its two main components, Cytidine and Choline are absorbed into the bloodstream.
Citicoline is also believed to protect nerve cells when in low oxygen conditions. Citicoline may be used for nutritional support in cerebral vascular disease, head trauma, stroke, and cognitive disorders. It also is used by those who have age related mental decline, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinsons.
