Designed
by a physician with a child in the autism spectrum, Sound Readers teaches children to read familiar
stories. Sound Readers helps children
improve word recognition and sentence building skills while teaching
through answering Who, What, Where, When and Why questions set to music. Inferential and factual reading comprehension are also developed and communication skills are
enhanced as they learn to read sentences and recognize sight
words.
This program is probably best used by a
child who already recognizes letters of the alphabet but needs help
building words and sentences. Other programs in this series are
Problem Solvers and Fun With Feelings. If you have tried and found
these programs beneficial, you will probably like this program as
well.
The child selects one of the question words
(Who, What, Where and When) and then selects the activity he or she would
like to participate in. The information is presented in small
chunks, repeating the same information in different games. There is
much praise when the child succeeds and when the child fails, they are
shown the correct response to build success.
Ultimate Learning Sound Readers helps
improve sight word reading skills, sentence reading, factual comprehension
and inferential comprehension. This CD features three songs by Cathy Bollinger, a music therapist
and singer/songwriter.
It is recommended that parents or teachers play the songs at least 5 times in car or home stereo before child uses it on PC. This will allow the
child to become familiar with the music's beat and lyrics before starting the reading program.
I would also recommend that the songs be acted out with the child and
parent when possible (for example, the Where song has the child identify
body parts - having the child touch the named body parts during the
song).
The program itself was created in four parts: Sing, Play, Read, Learning Center. A list of songs
and stories is presented and child can select desired song or story.
