An "island" is land with water around
it! That’s how you spell island! Two Wise Owls shows children how to
use mnemonic memorization devices like this to help them remember difficult
spellings and important information. Once they get the hang of
mnemonics, children can start creating their own visual or auditory
imagery to remember concepts and facts - if the child takes to this
learning strategy, it can become a powerful tool for acquiring and
remembering new information.
A mnemonic is an image and/or sequence of words, used for the rote
memorization of spelling and facts. Temple Grandin, the
internationally acclaimed autistic author and scientist, indicated in
her biography, "Thinking in Pictures," that she has used this
technique extensively by employing visual mnemonics to help remember
abstract concepts and translate between her visual thinking processes
and spoken words.
Using visual animations, Two Wise Owls provides motivating memory aids that are reinforced with the auditory production of the spelling. Therefore the
child can choose to practice the spelling as much as is needed. In addition,
children and adults are given the tools to make and print their own
mnemonics.
Clip art, teaching suggestions, teacher records and an accompanying set of cards are also included. Teacher controls allow specific mnemonics to be mastered at a time. Two Wise Owls is designed to support all those who have not yet enjoyed success in mastering awkward spellings.
